Nutrition & Food Philosophy

Nutrition and Cancer – a free downloadable food guide

Food is an important tool in your armour. Good food will make you feel good preparing, eating and sharing it. Never worry about sharing this food with your family – it's just as good for them too! One of our aims is to show how tasty healthy food is and to use a variety of ingredients to demonstrate how they can be cooked as part of your everyday diet.

At a time when you probably feel more powerless than at any time in the past, it's good to have one thing that you control. When preparing Lunch at Living Well we follow the Bristol Cancer diet – which is essentially organic vegan with eggs. We don't use caffeine or refined sugar. Sweetness comes from natural fruit or from agave syrup. Unless members let us know they are vegan, we may occasionally use honey.

We use organic food which is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods wherever possible. Some practitioners vary in what they allow – some allow meat, others wine. We don't when cooking your lunch at Living Well. Some of this is cost – organic food isn't cheap and organic meat is expensive. You can also miss out on many of the phytochemicals that are so good for you by sticking to a meat based diet. If you want to eat meat at home, try and make sure it's organic. If you can't afford all organic, try and get organic root vegetables at least.

We also try to keep those essential nutrients in the food by the ways in which they are cooked. We do cater for all diets and our cook is more than willing to cook either a different meal, or adapt the one we have for different diets or stages of treatment.

One important thing to remember; don't make food an extra stress in your life. Everyone has different tastes, so pick and choose from the recommendations and recipes to make your food a pleasure. The Penny Brohn centre has an excellent leaflet with broad recommendations.

Part of the lunch at a Living Well session is the company. It's a time to sit and relax with people who know what it's like and who don't mind talking about it – or equally not talking about it.
